One fine summer day last year, I met up with Jasleen, at her lovely home in Delhi. I had seen glimpses of her home on Instagram, and had fallen in love with the vibe and the aesthetics of this warm space. We spent an afternoon chatting over cake and tea, and I shot her home. I had to share this gorgeous space with you last year, but then my website went under revamp, and well, you know the story. Now that we are back, shiny & spiffy, I can’t wait to share this bright and happy home with you!

I was thrilled when Bhavna reached out to me for a home tour on ‘An Indian Summer’, a blog I love. She asked me to write about my home, so here goes…

We live in a 1000 sq ft apartment in the south of Delhi. The apartment had a simple layout. The front door opens directly into the living room which leads to a small lobby. This small room had four doors that led to the kitchen and three bedrooms. My husband Raj and I chose to knock off the inner wall of the middle bedroom. Although a third bedroom would have been useful, we decided instead to open it up to give a spacious feel to the apartment that otherwise appeared closed and small. This space became half kitchen and bar, and half dining room. My husband is the one who planned the structural changes, but the interiors were left to me. 

It has been my endeavour to create a home that is cozy, cohesive and welcoming… something one looks forward to come back to everyday. I would describe my style as contemporary and earthy, with decided Indian touches through art, textile and motifs. Our home has a mix of furniture. I love the fact that nothing matches because things have been added at different times, based on our needs and finances. The feel of the home is lived-in and earthy. The furniture has been picked up over the years from various places like expat sales, FabIndia, Amar colony furniture market and thrifted pieces from gypsies on MG Road. The fabric used in the Roman blinds is mostly from Jaipur. The living room rug was picked up from an export-surplus shop in Kasauli where we were holidaying last summer. The cushions have been collected over the years from annual sales at Good Earth, Shades of India and Nicobar.

The colour grey is my favourite and you will find it in all the rooms in varying degrees. Black and beige is the other obsession. But I temper it with earthy reds and corals via cushions and throws. I also love painting patterns on the walls using stencils. Studio pottery is something I adore and you will find mugs, jugs, platters and bowls all over. I love the fact that I have mismatched coffee mugs but then that is part of the appeal! The walls have framed art posters from The National Museum, The National Gallery of Modern Art, Play Clan, funky wall décor from Happily Unmarried, 1469, Chumbak and Poster Gully. I am particularly proud of the far corner of the kitchen that houses our bar essentials. Funky signs, movie posters, terracotta tiles and wooden shelves make it an interesting corner.

I have always wanted my home to be minimalistic but I have long accepted the fact that I am a maximalist at heart. However, I do keep editing and organising my home. I am a chronic re-arranger! Textiles, plants, colourful posters, lanterns, books and pottery – all these help create a space that is pleasant yet functional (I hope!). Over the past few years, I have styled homes for friends and taken up some projects where I have recreated this look, taking my client’s personalities, needs and their likes/dislikes into account.
